Ethiopian red banana

Question
I have several of these plants and have let them continue to grow (at least 20
feet high).  Once they "flower," a giant bulb protrudes from the center core.  The
tree then seems to die.  I know if I prune them before they reach this point they
will regrow, but a couple have already "flowered" and I'm wondering if there is
anyway to save them?  Thanks for the assistance.

Answer
Hi Chris, Bananas (edible or ornamental..) have a growth pattern that goes like this, each plant grows until it either sends out a flower (ornamental) or pod (edible) and then dies back, letting the ensuing "pups" take over as the next adult plant; by you pruning the psuedostem back, you are just delaying this final stage. Let them do what is natural, and then cut the enitre individual back at soil level, allowing the next one to achieve its goal, etc. etc. The underground "Corm" (root system) will continually send out new pups to replace the dying ones, this is how they grow and if kept to a minumum, meaning only allowing 4 or 5 to grow at once, will allow for healthier, neater and more productive plants.
