QuestionWe have a Chinese hibiscus that has only had 2 blooms last year and none this year. We fertilized the hibiscus with a bloom booster and it nearly died, and I left it alone for a month it only got rain water and sprinkler water (we were in India) when I got back I removed the dead leaves and flushed the soil with water. Then it started to regrow and now, a month in a half later, it has nice lush foliage, but no blooms though. It's in full sun, but we are going to have to bring it in soon for the frost. Do have any recommendations to get it to bloom, if not now then at least eventually? Also we read that coffee grounds and banana peels could help. And, also, in the past we抳e been very nervous about using fertilizer because it often burned our hibiscus. And one more piece of information is that I just pruned a side of the plant because I read pruning helps it to bloom, but I didn抰 want to trim the whole plant. Thank you.
AnswerHibiscus will not benefit much from a high phosphate intake (bloom booster), that normally is effective on flowering annuals and perrenials; full Sun and fertilizing with a balanced granular 3 times a year is the ticket to a healthy plant. They will bloom when "they" are ready, for they can be somewhat problematic when it comes to this. Just maintain its health, and the blooms will come. Water properly and keep control of insect problems and the rest will fall into place.
