QuestionOur Christmas palms were hit by freezing this winter in Cape Coral,Fl. Outer fronds are brown. Some have fallen and others have not. Inside new frond are green but are breaking at the base of the leafy part of the frond and falling. This has happened on at least five different trees in different location of or lot.
AnswerThe new emerging fronds break at the Petiole (stem) because of the palms weakened state (cold stress); but the mere fact that they immerged is great news, and if they are sending out any seed pods off the main trunk, is another good sign (check for that..). Bottom line here is if the new fronds don't emerge and the top part of the palm pulls out and leaves a mushy opening, then the palm is in total decline and any chances of recovery are slim, but the ones with the broken , new fronds, are slowly recuperating. Spray the entire crown down with a Copper fungicide, this will help deter further problems from fungal infections. Nick
