QuestionIn a recent windstorm (65+ mph) several fronds were bent to the point of breakage. At the point of breakage I can see the fibers of the frond exposed and they have no rigidity left. There is still one newly forming frond standing straight up from the trunk. Will this new frond support the tree? What should I do with the damaged fronds? Are the damaged fronds beyond saving? I'm afraid to wrap them with the remaining good frond as it's not strong enough to support the weight of the broken ones.
AnswerHi Zac, Don't cut any fronds off until they turn brown, as long as there is green, then there is functioning tissue that is vital to the palms health; do go ahead and brace them so they don't separate completely, but don't detach anything that is still hanging on, even the petiole is hanging on by a couple of fibers. It is going to look pretty bad , but looks can be deceiving, and the life of the Palm lies in the balance. Spray it down with a "Chelated Palm nutritional concentrate", Home Depot sells it and it will get nutrients directly into the system of the Palm. Spray it on when there is dew on the fronds (the morning...) for the pores (stomata) are open at that time and the nutritional spray will be taken in. Nick
