Trimming monterous Philodendron

Question
Hi, I have a massive philodendron with large leaves and five large trunks. I have trimmed it back drastically after winter for the last few years, taking all the leaves near the ground and leaving only the smaller new growth. The large trunks rise to nearly 4 feet, and this is a very attractive trim as long as it lasts. The plant has always regrown.

My question is: What are the consequences of cutting off the air roots which come from the vertical growth. They are thick and also run through the ground trunks. Do they anchor the vertical portion of the trunks? Thanks much.

Answer
Arlene, those are functioning roots and you could cut some of them, but if the plant is as large as you say, then it is relying on them for uptake of nutrients and water and any reduction will stress the crown. Severe reduction of the crown of a philodendron isn't much of a problem, for the roots are the important part that will generate new growth, but cutting back the roots is a sure ticket for decline and possible death of the plant.
