Plumeria Pruning

Question
Hi Nick - I live in Huntington Beach and I have about 5 plumeria plants that have been in the ground for about 3 years, they grow fantastic and are currently dormant. I wanted to cut a couple of them because they sprouted new branches last year that make them sort of unstable, they seem to be growing out instead of up. When they get full of leaves and flowers they almost tip over because the branches are so long. What is the best way to go about pruning them? Can I just cut off whatever I want? And is there a way to make them start growing taller instead of wider? Thanks in advance!
Stephanie

Answer
Hi Stephanie, wait until they begin to show new growth and then cut the extraneous growth off; the cut end will callous over and new growth will appear as side shoots below the cut. Take the stems you cut off, and lay them in a shady spot until you see the cut area on them begin to callous, then stick them in a location you want new plants; they will root and a new plant will begin to flourish for you. You really can't hurt Frangipanis by cutting them to proper shape, they are very user friendly. You can even cut up the section you excise from the mother plant into smaller pieces, and allow them to callous also, this way you can start numerous plants; try to keep each cutting at least 10 inches in length. Good luck! and have fun! Nick
