Philodendron Selloum

Question
Several of my mature Philodendron Selloum suffered significant damage during the recent freezes in Houston.  I can send typical pictures of the damage if that would help you recommend the best way to trim them correctly.

Answer
Hi Rick, I can pretty much assume what they look like, and as long as the ground didn't freeze, the roots should be fine; as far as pruning them back, it is best to wait until warmer weather, then you will have a  clearer picture of what needs to be pruned. If you prune now, you could be stimulating new growth to quickly, and another cold snap will exacerbate the existing cold stress that the plant is experiencing. When you do prune, don't be shy about it, Philodendrons are very durable and you can't really hurt them by giving them a good cutback, just be sure you don't cut the lead stem. Be aesthetic about it, and prune to how you want it to look, after you remove the dead tissue. Nick
