QuestionQUESTION: I live in Louisiana and we had freezing temperature's last week and all my saga palms have turned brown. How do I go about trimming them? At my place of business we have alot of saga's a landscaping Co. came out and cut them in the center and rounded the saga's like a shrub. Is this the right way to do this?
ANSWER: Hi Karen, I am assuming you mean "Sago", which is a cycad and there are Kings and Queens, the King is the most common and has stiff fronds that are pointed along the edges; if this is the correct plant then the common pruning treatment is to remove any fronds that are totally brown, they have been known to survive with all removed except the very top (albeit not recommended.), but in a case where all the fronds have been cold stressed to the point of complete browning out, then it is advisable to take them off, new growth will eventually emerge from the top of the Sago itself, don't touch the actual main trunk at all. Just snip them at the trunk and they will snap of easily, but be careful, they are sharp. Nick

QUESTION: What is the difference in the trunk and the main trunk? I so want to do this right we have had these sago palms for 6 years and they are quit large and the main focal point of our yard. Thank you so much for your help.
Answer...I'm sorry for the confusion,,the main trunk is the fat center trunk with the fronds attached to it, they snap off very easily, but again, be careful, they are sharp..are you sure they are Sagos??..Sagos only get to be about 8 feet tall...let me know, so we are sure to be on the same page here...Nick
