QuestionMy question is regarding fox tail palms, This winter we had a very cold snap. I was not able to protect any of my palms.
Now that the whether has warm up I notice that several of my palms have developed some type of brown syrup or sap at the bottom of the tree trunk they have also turn a very dark black color. Could you please explain what this is, My husband seems to think they are dying, Is there anything that I can do in order to save these expensive palms?
AnswerThe cold snap was a very severe one, and traumatized many Palms, this is a reaction that is referred to as "bleeding", where internal liquids actually are forced to the surface, it often happens from physical trauma like lightening strikes; all you can do now is keep it properly irrigated and hope that the heart of the Palm is still viable. The Palm will either continue to decline or show new growth from the heart (center), but this will take months to determine one way or the other. Nick
