QuestionWe have a Mass Cane Stump (24" or so tall), in a large pot, that is on our patio, in South Florida, since December '09. With the recent cold temperatures in the 30's for a few days, a large number of the leaves have varying stages of brown sections. Some as much as 50%. What should we do, trimming, water, fertilizer, or something else that will help it recover, or, should we just wait and give it time?
AnswerHi Al, as with most cold damaged plants, they need to be left alone until new growth emerges in a month or so, then you will have a clearer picture of just what needs to excised; the rule of thumb is that if the frond or leaf is completely brown then it can be removed, but if it shows any green at all, and this can sometimes just mean the vein or petiole, then leave it, for it is still functioning, and in the stressed state that the plant is in, it needs all the help it can get for photosynthesis. Water it as needed, but don't let it sit in standing water, or it will rot, just keep it properly watered and wait and watch. Nick
