frostbitten banana tree

Question
I have several banana trees that I am keeping over winter in my small greenhouse. Our temps have been unseasonably cold and despite having heaters x2, I believe my banana trees are frostbitten. They are in containers and leaves turned from green to brown and are limp. Will they survive? Do I need to cut the leaves off? What should I do to give them the best chance of survival?

Answer
Hi Tara, it all depends on the Corm (underground Rhizome or root), if it is compromised, then the plant is toast, but if it is still viable, then new growth will develop, what you need to do is cut the main trunk (pseudostem) below the lowest petiole (leaf stem) and when I say cut, I mean sever the top right off, and discard; new growth will come out of the center of the cut, "if" the Corm is still alive, and this will develop into a new plant for you.
