Question
palm tree in pool cage
I want to remove a 10 ft, 4 trunk P. roebelenii from inside a pool cage planting area. It was planted in 2003 and is nearing the max height (touching the screen) for the corner space it is in. I have a few questions:
1. Is there a ratio for root ball size relative to size of visible plant (trunk or heighth)? How extensively must I dig to retrieve sufficient root system for transplanting?
2. I am relocating it from an eastern exposure to a western exposure setting. Will this be an issue in its ability to thrive? And if so, are there any pro-active measures to help offset the trauma?
3. I live in Orlando, FL - any problem transplanting it in late Nov to mid-Dec?
4. Any estimate as to the weight of the transplant itself - I have 4 men to assist with carrying to new location, and they have already asked me this question:)
thanks for your help,

AnswerHi Anne, I just had a similiar question, concerning moving a large Grapefruit tree, and I will tell you what I told him, that in my opinion, it is the job of a professional landscaper (with credentials!), this is a tough job and the right equipment and knowledge is essential; I will not be responsible for giving advice in moving this beutiful specimen, because its roots have already spanned under the pools surrounding surface and at least having a professional check it out would be highly advisable.
