QuestionI have read that XMAS lights and pipe heaters (heat tape?) can be used. Heat tape had lots of cautions so I was afraid it would injure the trees. Do XMAS lights (twinkle lights?) give off enough heat to matter? Exactly what part of the tree do I need to protect? Will the fronds brown from frost? I live in Jackson, MS, last year I used heating pad, blankets, and a frost blanket wrapping when temps got below 30. Hoping to find a more manageable approach!
Thanks!
AnswerHi Aleeta, Xmas lights are indeed a viable alternative to protection against a light frost, but a hard frost may still harm the Palm even with this precaution; I use frost fibers here in South Florida and consider the extra effort worth it. The leaf tissue (fronds) are the most vulnerable part of the palm and Xmas lights will prevent a light frost from settling, but a hard frost will form because the minute amount of heat being given off by the lights is not sufficient to deter it.
