QuestionWe recently bought three large Queen palm from a nursery. The largest one is stunning! The trunk is 48" in circumference 6' up the trunk. But, the roots on it are infested with an incredible amount of ants. I noticed how bad when watering hevily. There were thousands and thousands of ants headed for higher ground up the trunk, then later back to the roots. Will they harm the tree? And if so, what can I do about it? I also noticed some different, very, very, small ants, that seem to be living on the upper part of the tree???
AnswerThe larger ants that stream out when you water are carpenter ants, you need to hit them with a soaking of any insecticidal drench...there are numerous ones on the market; carpenter ants are pretty easy to get rid of, their nests are not that big, by ant standards. The smaller ones up above are of no consequence, they will do no harm to the Palm. Nick
