QuestionI live in the Pacific Northwest (Redmond, WA) and recently purchased a row red banana plant. Should I move my indoors for the winter? If not, how is the best way to winterize it? Thank you.
AnswerHi Veronica, You didn't mention how big the plant was, if it is under 4 feet, you can containerize it for the Winter and place it near a window where it can get 6 hours of Sun, this will at least keep it alive for the season, but it won't thrive; Bananas are Tropical by Nature and need a Hot and Humid environment to really prosper. Another method would be to cut it back to ground level, after the first frost melts the leaves and then mulch it over heavily to protect the underground Rhizome from freezing. Next Spring it will send out new growth if the ground didn't freeze where it sat. Nick
