QuestionI've cut back some Ixora and wonder if the cuttings can be rooted in water? Also, how do you propogate an Areca Palm? Thanking you in advance for your assistance.
AnswerHi Sue, propagation of Ixora is by taking 5" tip cuttings (they can be green or hardwood..) dipping them in a rooting hormone and putting them in Vermiculite; keep them in a shady area and cover the cuttings with a baggy with a couple of holes punched in it. The baggy keeps the Vermiculite from drying out too fast and keeps moisture on the tip itself. It usually takes a couple of weeks before you will see roots and then you just transplant. You can use soil if you don't have Vermiculite, but Vermiculite stays loosely packed around the cutting, where soil can become compacted. The Areca is usually from seeds, but you can separate segments of the Palm itself and plant them elsewhere to start a new Palm. Nick
