leaves turning yellow on my bouganvillea

Question
QUESTION: I live in Arizona and have a potted Bouganvillea that was doing very well until I notice perfectly cut holes in the leaves which I found out may be cutter bees? Now, the leaves are turning yellow and dying off. How can I save this plant?

ANSWER: Hi Debbie, Bougs are extremely sensitive to overwatering, especially if they are potted up; yellowing leaves are an indication of this, however, there is always other possibilities albeit more remote. You didn't allude to how much water you are giving it or if it is in direct sunlight or not, and what condition the soil in the container is (compacted?); Often growers use the wrong type of soil in containers, for before too long it becomes compacted and this leads to roots becoming stressed. Let me know these particulars so I can assist you better. Nick

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: We have been getting really hot (118degree)days here so i was watering it every night...i suppose that might be the problem. I used regular potting soil i bought from the store when i planted it. i have it in a very large pot on the south side of the house so it does get a lot of sun.

Answer
...Move it to a location where it is out of the afternoon sun by 2pm, Bougs like a lot of Sun, but like anything else, there is a limit, and 118 degrees,,,,oooof!  Once in its new location, you can back off the irrigating to twice a week when the soil is dry halfway down the container. When you do water it, water it real well, and then it can be left alone for seveal days until you need to check it again. Nick
