QuestionHello Nick,
I'm in Florida and have about 20 palms in my yard. I only have an issue with one, an Adonidia Palm that I planted about three years ago. It had two trees in the clump when I bought it. About a year ago the top of the smaller tree fell off and the palm obviously died. About 8 months ago the bigger tree, about 7 ft high, stopped growing. The tree top did not grow any new fronds. The fronds on it, still green although brownish and shredded on the ends, never fully opened but never dropped off. The top of the tree is thin but green and feels pretty firm. I guess my question is, could the tree be dead and still retain the green fronds? If not, what do I need to do to get it going again. Thank you.
AnswerHi John, if your Christmas Palm was stung by a frost or freeze, it probably is in its death throes; what will happen is it will linger awhile and eventually the top will turn mushy and the crown will collapse (as did the smaller one..), this is agonizing for you I know, as it was for me when I waited and waited for a turn one way or the other. The bottom line is, if it hasn't sent out any new growth in months and the existing growth appears stressed, then its probably, and I emphasize "probably" not going to. It is up to you, how long you want to hang in there with it, but don't be too optimistic about the outcome. Nick
