QuestionNick - I have a small brick paver patio and would like to
use tropical plants to create a natural privacy fence on the perimeter of each side that extends beyond the roof line(approximate 10'). I live in South FL and my patio has SE exposure. I'm considering using a small Heliconia or Banana in the center flanked by a variety of small palms, using ferns and bromeliads for ground cover. I would also like a canopy effect from the trees selected as they mature. What are your thoughts on these choices and what type of palms would you recommend?
AnswerHi Theresa, Heliconia and Bananas are very invasive, so you will have to consider the upkeep of keeping them in check; bromeliads are fine as are the various varieties of ferns available. I would consider Areca palms for size, privacy and quick growth; they need very little upkeep, and give you the tropical ambiance you are looking. For a shade provider you have to be careful, for anything that would fit that meaning, would have to have a pretty extensive root system that may eventually lift your pavers. Nick
