Outdoor potted palm tree

Question

Palm tree
Hi Nick,
I have a palm tree on my deck in Vancouver BC, and it has been with us and thriving despite our cold winters for at least 18 years.  This year however the leaves are not growing well and are brown at the ends.  The tree is about 3 1/2 feet high and the Pot its growing in is about 2 feet in diameter and about 2 feet deep.  Is it time to replace the soil?  My wife did put in some new fertilizer about a week ago and trimmed back the dying branches.  What other remedies would you suggest.  This tree has been amazing that it has survived so many cold and snowy winters.

Thanks for your help.
Harv

Answer
Hi Harvey, yes replace the soil, it needs to be replaced at least once a year due to salt build up from frequent fertilizing; it sounds like this is the problem, and also it likes humidity and the browing ends could be lack of it. Mist it frequently to simulate humidity and change the soil and you should be fine.Nick
