queen palm caterpillars

Question
I have a year old queen palm that just lost the new/center frond. The frond, although only partially open, was dead and upon closer examination, I saw a number of small black caterpillars and alot of what looks like small eggs or poop. The center frond easily pulled right out. The older fronds are still green and are 7-8 ft tall. My question I read where cold can be a contributing factor to the loss of a new frond but what can I do about the caterpillars? I noticed them on a healthy palm nearby as well and I don't want to loose that one as well.

Answer
Hi Rob, the caterpillars are a secondary problem, I am more concerned with the fact that the center frond pulled out; this is usually caused by Crown Rot and is usually fatal to the Palm, even though the other fronds are still viable looking. I would check with your local Extension Agent, he may be able to arrange for a Master Gardner to take a look. Nick
