QuestionQUESTION: I purchased a Bromeliad for my office, one with 2 yellow spikes that fade into red. I noticed today that one of the sword-like blooms has small yellow stamens suddenly growing out of it. Is this normal? Good? Bad?
ANSWER: Hi Shelly, its normal, the flowers will eventually fade and new growth will develop from the base that will be future flowers; keep it watered, but not wet and cut the flower off when it fades, in fact, it will probably just pull out for you when it has run its course. The sprouts from the bottom will be new plants, that can even be separated and planted in their own pots. Nick

QUESTION: My bromeliad that is dying now has little plants sprouting amongst the leaves. I assume that these are pups, but they are not in the soil. How can I transplant them?
Thank you!
~Shelly
Answer...Shelly, detach them with a sharp knife, when the base of the pup is firm and set it in a soilless mixture (even mix of sphagnum peat moss, perlite, sand and well rotted leaf mold or compost) place them in a shady area and keep them misted until roots form, then treat them as you would the adult, (water the center cup of the plant and then a little around the base).
