QuestionLast fall someone gave me a stalk of lucky bamboo. I have it in a vase of water on my desk at work. It was doing fine, then someone suggested I fill the vase with pebbles. Within a week of doing so, the leaves turned yellow and the first segment of the plant followed the trend. I emptied the pebbles and gave it fresh water, but the yellowing continued. I felt radical surgery was needed. I cut off the yellowing segments which also meant the leaves went, as they were growing from the top segment. The plant now remains just a stalk, which looks ok, it's a healthy green, but it has yet to put out new leaves. What should I do?
AnswerOk Beth, first problem is you are probably giving it tap water, which contains chorine which is very detrimental, use purified water; second problem sounds like it may be getting too much light, it initially needs indirect light and then as it adapts, you can move it into more direct light. Don't give it any fertilizer until it is well established, and then just a few drops of soluble like Miracle Grow or Peters, it actually can go months without any. Cut off the yellowed mushy rooted area and hopefully it will regenerate growth, but just make sure its out of direct light and in purified water, that is to be changed weekly. Nick
