Fertilizing Bromeliads

Question
QUESTION: When you say fertilizing bromeliad with liquid fertilizer, like 20-20-20, 1/4 strength???, should I spray the entire flower or pour a little in the cup.  Also, some growers say put a little Osmocote in the soil instead.  Which is better?

ANSWER: Hi Susan, Osmocote is fine, it is granular and last longer than a soluble would, if you use the diluted Peters soluble, pour it at the roots, it just allows the Bromeliad to get nutriiton quicker then the slow release granular, but does have to be used more frequently. Nick

QUESTION: Hi Nick.  I recently got a chenille potted plant.  The nursery said it was a shade plant.  However, on the internet I get conflicting info about light requirements.  I live in Miami, FL.  Is early morning sun O.K.?  Also, I'm suppose to fertilize once a month with the nursery's granular mix of 12-6-8. Does that sound right?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Susan, they are right on, but morning sun is fine, when they say shade, they in fact mean morning sun, for its a source of light, but the heat is missing, and this is what can scorch Bromeliads, albeit they can even take a little afternoon sun, they just will lighten and lose their deep color. I would fertilize a little less too, like every 2 months, but the nutrient count they cited is fine. Nick
