What is the palm tree drip line?

Question
Hello Nick,

As a follow on question to leaves turning yellow, what and where exactly is the palm tree drip line?  I've purchased high quality palm fertilizer, but I want to be certain I'm broadcasting it in the right zone.  Also, I have many landscaping rocks (about fistfull in size each) at the base of each of my 20' trees.  Do I need to remove them to lay down the fertilizer, or can I sprinkle it on top then water?

Thanks!
Lori

Answer
Hi Lori, the drip line is the farthest reaching frond, you want to spread the granular like you feeding chickens, evenly from that point (drip line) into the trunk; the rocks can be left as long as there isn't a weed barrier down under them. When you spread the granular, you will water it in well, and the nutrients will seep right through the rocks to the palms roots. Remember that when granular fertilizer releases its nutrients, the shell will remain, so just because there is still evidence of the granular, doesn't mean the nutrients haven't been released, and once every 3 months at a rate of about a pound per diameter of the trunk should suffice. Nick
