canary island palms

Question
I purchased 8 canary island palms last year they are about 5 feet high but due to the severe winter we have had in the UK the palms are now not looking to good most of the sphere's are brown allough the centre is still green. Doe's this mean that they are permanently damaged by frost and will they recover what should I do to rectify this damage

Answer
Hi Ken, even though they are frost damaged, the new emerging spear is the determining factor to whether the palm is going to survive or not; the fact that it is still green is good news, all you can do now however, is watch and wait, while maintaining adequate irrigation (not too much!). Time and mother nature will tell whether the damage in the inner tissue was too severe or not. I have gotten many questions pertaining to freeze and frost damage to plants, and the answer is the same for all, wait and please be patient, some plants take longer then others to recuperate. Nick
