QuestionHi Nick,
I have a corn plant (Draecena?) that I purchased at a street fair several years ago and has thrown off many flowers at this point and grown so high that it is hitting my ceiling and bending as though it will fall over. I lived in NY many years and this plant (at this point) would cost $250 plus. I'm very proud of it and want to trim the top and transplant it, but don't know what to do (had noluck with cuttings from my HUGE Fiddle Leaf Fig. Also don't know - am I supposed to put something on the area that is cut (it will need a hedge clipper, it's so thick) to protect it? Have to do this very soon or I fear the plant will die.
Many thanks,
Sally
AnswerHi Sally, when you cut it, it will send out side shoots from the cut area and those will curl up and continue to grow in the same pattern as the original plant; you don't need to do anything to the cut, it will callous over on its own. If you want you can take the cut section, strip away numerous leaves, dip it in a growing hormone and put it in a moistened perlite or vermiculite to start a new plant. Nick
