QuestionMy neighbor gave my husband some pods off their plant. He was told to soak them in water until they sprout? But, I loooked at one of your postings and it says to plant them an inch in the ground. They are orange and have been soaking for about a week. I have been changing the water every few days. Should I just plant them in the ground and how much sun do they need?
AnswerHi Jackie, first they need to be orange in color, thats the color they are when they drop from the pod onto the ground in their native habitat; at this point they will have about a 10-30 per cent germination rate. I have taken them (just for fun..) and planted them an inch down and had about 1 out of 4 germinated. I have to be honest with you, I have never heard of soaking them, but it works for green and wax beans so maybe it helps quicken the process and increases the rate of germination, but I wouldn't let them soak too long or they will assuredly rot on you.
