Questionwe just bought a hse. and have a large clump of maybe twenty bamboo palms approx 15' or taller , how can i seperate them and transplant them , they are growing right against patio . thank you merry christmas ,nick
AnswerHi Nick, this is a labor intensive endeavor, underground is a root system called a Rhizome, all the shoots you see have developed from this large root ball and separation at this stage is going to take some effort; the cuts need to me made so that the entire section you excise has a root system connected that will sustain the crown. I would hire a knowledgeable person to take this on, and move the entire clump from where it is, the location is totally wrong for a Bamboo, and it is very messy when it sheds its leaves. If you move the entire clump, then you will be assured of the continued growth of this beautiful plant but if you attempt to segment it, you will definitely set it back and it will be years before it really takes off again for you, if it survives at all.
