Night blooming Cereus

Question
My Night blooming Cereus has to come indoors because it's starting to freeze, but it's too big for our house. Can I cut it back drastically and cut its root-ball to a smaller size so I can put it back in the same pot with some fresh soil and still hope to see it bloom next summer? If not, what other alternatives do you suggest?

Answer
Hi Judy, you can cut it back without any problem, and even transplant pieces of the cactus  for new plants, but I wouldn't segment the root ball, but rather transplant the entire root ball in a new soil base, or even a step up with the container size. Nick
