QuestionI bought a red banana tree potted in July and it was growing well. Now the
outside edges are starting to brown and then die off. It still potted and gets
full sun. Some people suggested that there's too much salt from watering in
the pot and that I should flush it out, but to no avail. Should I water it more
than once a week and how often should I feed it?
Thanks.
AnswerRandy, I often get questions on growing bananas in containers, even the super dwarf banana is marginal at best for even the largest of containers; they just are not meant to be grown in a cramped container, the root system (corm) get too extensive for it and the plant soon becomes stressed. Your banana is stressing badly and needs its roots to be freed up; excess salt is just one of many problems a potted banana will develop. If you have no choice but to grow it in a container, it must be as big as you can possibly manage, and even then its going to be just a matter of time before problems develop...Nick
