QuestionWhat kind of soil do I plant a Gardenia bush/tree in? I plan to keep it in a large terra cotta pot on my patio.
AnswerHi Glenys, normally it would be a light potting mix, if planted in a plastic container, but with a Terra Cotta, I would add some Peat Moss to help maintain the moisture in the soil; the reason for this, is Terra Cotta tends to dry out much quicker. Mix 2 parts Potting Soil, 1 part Peat Moss and 1 part Perlite and you should be fine, makes sure you line the bottom couple of inches with a drainage medium like gravel, or pebbles, this will keep the roots from any standing water that may collect on the bottom.
