indoor tropical fig tree

Question
I have 2 indoor fig trees.  One is about 20 years old.  In the last year the trees started excreting a sweet syrup from its leaves and onto the floor.  It creates a mess to clean up.  What's happening?  Should/How do I make it stop?
Thanks, Sylvia

Answer
Hi Sylvia, the secretion isn't be secreted by the plant, its the tiny insects that are feeding on it; let me explain, when a mite, or aphid or various other, almost microscopic insects feeds, it secretes a honeydew type of substance from its rear. This is the mess you are seeing, you need to treat the entire plant with either an horticultural oil, or insecticidal soap, even household isopropyl alcohol will do; spray it down outside, let it sit for about 3 or 4 hours and then spray it down with your hose to remove all the dead insects and residual spray.
