Cutting back an indoor banana plant

Question
Hi, I have an indoor banana plant that has reached about 6 feet tall.  It was a beautiful plant as it grew, but over the past few months, more and more leaves seem to be getting too heavy to support and are drooping over and snapping.  Any suggestions?  I have heard that I can cut the stalk of the banana plant (below the leaves) and the plant will start regrowing after a month or so.  Is that true?  The plant is well watered.  It currently is planted in a 10 inch pot.  Does it possibly need transplanted?  Please help.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Tracy, growing Bananas in a container is not the easiest thing to do, they will never produce fruit in a container but can be grown as an ornamental; to answer your question, if you cut it halfway down the stock, it will send out new growth from the center of the cut in a couple of weeks. If you transplant it into a larger container, it will grow larger of course initially,  but it will still reach a point where it will become root bound and will stress and require some sort of action again, either repotting or cutting it back for regeneration.
