Question
Ok i have some questions for you...sorry they are not of a particular plant.  The first question is for a guzmania bromeliad.  They say they should sprout 1-3 pups that you can separate and grow again.  What exactly are pups on a bromeliad cause i love the plant and want one FOREVER HAHA.  I heard they die after their first and only bloom.  Is the so-called flower the red part of the plant and the green leaves are just the "mother plant" and the red part is the pup?  Please help thank you soo much.  Email me the answers please cause i'm not sure if ill know how to review the answer

Answer
Hi Christopher, Bromeliads produce side plants, these are what you are referring to as pups, they are self perpetuating as are many plants; a flower will actually form, the red and green leaves are just that, leaves and the entire structure is the mother plant. When the mother produces a flower, she will slowly decline and it may take a year to die, but in the mean time, she will produce the side plants (pups) which you can cut away when they have developed the same pattern as the mother (albeit smaller); the method of cutting these pups off, is to cut down between the pup and its mother and cut the pup away with roots attached (hopefully), if there is even a small root this will be fine, then you replant it in its own container.
