QuestionQUESTION: I bought a bougainvillea plant and a hibiscus "tree" to plant in the same large
pot. I wanted to different heights of blooms. When I got home my son told me
that "Grandma said" I couldn't put these two together because of competing root
systems. Is this true?
ANSWER: Hi Betty, well Grandma is partially right, but a more important problem with doing this is the irrigation each one requires; The Boug is a drought tolerant plant that requires limited irrigation while the Hibiscus will require moderate irrigation; bottom line is the Boug will suffer if you cater to the Hibiscus and visaversa.Nick

QUESTION: Thanks for your response. What would you recommend putting with the
hibiscus "tree"? I would still like to have two different heights, color, sizes of
blooms. Thanks.
AnswerHi again, well, there is a limited amount of root space (as Grandma had said), so I would stick with just the Hibiscus and then put some of your favorite perennials or annuals around the edges, for they take up less space then another bush or tree would, and the area they will be occupying would be the top part of the container, where the Hibiscus would take the bottom part.:) Nick
