QuestionI planted a Foxtail last February that has a trunk diameter of about 9 inches at the base. It grew beautifully all last year. We had one light freeze this winter which I protected by wrapping with Christmas lights and blankets... no signs of cold damage after that. (I learned my lesson after I lost one the prior year to frost.)
Now that it is warming, the palm is less vibrant and more of a yellowish green rather than a dark green as it was last year. I fertilized about 6 weeks ago with 13-3-13 palm fertilizer, but the color has not improved.
I have two smaller Foxtails that have grown new palms already this year and their colors are dark green. The palm in question has not yet grown any new palms this year. The bottom palm is turning brown and appears to getting ready to fall off, but there is no other signs of change.
Should I be giving a different type of fertilizer? I water each day for 20 minutes on a drip tube.
Any suggestions?
AnswerHi Phil, what you have done is sufficient to get the required nutrients into the palm, the existing pale fronds will remain so it is the emerging fronds that will show improvement; the bottom brown frond is normal and will shed itself. Give it time now to recuperate, and watch the emerginf frond, it will tell the tale of the tape...Nick
