QuestionOur landscape people cut every last palm frond off our 20 years old sago palm with nothing left but the trunk. They are claiming it was diseased but that wasn't the case. I called a local nursery and they said it wouldn't harm the sago and it would put out new growth. I would like to know if this true.
AnswerHi Pam, albeit it wasn't the wisest thing for your landscaper to do, if it was infested with acalaspis scale then it was probably necessary, that said, it will send out new growth from the top, but the problem (scale) is probably still there, are you in Florida? the scale problem on Sagos (both kings and queens) has been rampant the last 3 years and can only be controlled with an oil spray and a soil drench; now if it was this and not a disease, which I suspect, then once new growth begins, watch for this scale (white dandruff looking substance) and treat immediately, if it is a disease, then we have to see its symptoms and treat accordingly, keep me apprised, Nick
