Easter Lily

Question
I received a very healthy & blooming Easter Lily this Spring and although it has quit blooming, it is still very healthy. Is it possible to plant it outside and have it thrive in the central Virginia region?  Or should it remain an indoor plant?  Thanks for any advice!

Answer
Elizabeth, they are grown from bulbs and the ones you have will eventually die back to ground level, if you put them in the ground in an area that gets light but is protected from high wind and extreme heat, you should get another couple of blooms in the summer and fall; let them die back in the pot and then cut the excess crown off and plant the bulbs with the roots facing down, ideally they like to have their tops in the sun, while the roots are protected by mulch or even smaller annuals planted at their base. Keep them from drying out and you should be fine. Nick
