damaged ponytail palm

Question
I have a 30+year-old ponytail palm that has been kept in small pots so its about 3 ft. tall.  It has been doing grate - with about six shoots on the truck.

Tragedy!  I walked out this morning and obviously (I think - it could have been one of my cats but I don't think so, my 8-month old schnauzer puppy enjoyed himself while outside last evening (dark).  All but two of the shoots have been carefully pulled off one leaf at a time and the main trunk has about a six x three inch patch eaten out of it.  From the side the trunk looks like a shallow letter "C".  Is there a chance that I can save the plant?

Answer
Hi Kay, as long as the root ball is intact, it should refurbish itself; it is going to be stressed, needless to say, because of the damage to the crown, but I think if you can keep the little fur balls away from doing any more damage,it should make it; there isn't really anything you can do at this point except prevent further stress and let mother nature get it back to health. Nick
