QuestionI purchased several majesty palms to use as patio palms in containers. All had roots growing out the bottom of the pot. I repotted using commercial soil and slightly loosened the roots. Now they look wilted. Did disturbing the roots injure the palms? I also have some from last summer that have developed black spots on the leaves and the ends of the fronds are turning brown. Is this a fungus? I live in Southeast Texas and they did quite well last summer.
AnswerHi Sue, Majestys like humid conditions and low light, the brown edges are from lack of humidity (which can be simulated with frequent wetting of the fronds), the black spots could indeed be a fungal problem, and an application of a copper fungicide would be a prudent endeavor. They may have wilted from transplant shock, but I wouldn't be too concerned about that, did you give them a good drink after transplanting, and did you line the bottom of the new container with some drainage medium (pebbles, gravel etc.)? Majestys are difficult for many people to grow, because of low light, humid needs they have, but if you can provide it with the right conditions, they do just fine.....good luck and get back to me with the info I requested, and I will be able to help you further...regards Nick:)
