Question
My two trees have gotten too big.  The winter killed off the fronds and the center part, but there are new shoots that will come out from that center.  Can you cut the tree off mid trunk and will new shoots come out like a banana tree does in order to reduce the height?

Hi Debbi, I have to admit, I had to do some research on this one, but I got the information needed; you can top many ferns and the bottom will regenerate, and the top can be replanted; bad news is, the Australian isn't one of those, if you do you will kill it. You mentioned you had new growth coming out of the center, so I would prune off the dead fronds and keep the trunk (which is actually part of the root ball) well misted, but not too much moisture at the soil roots.  good luck..regards Nick
