QuestionWe planted foxtail palms in the panhandle of Florida in April. They did very well, but for the past few months we have had very cold weather. All of the fawns have turned brown and look horrible. If a freeze warning is issued we water the plants, use Christmas lights around the base to keep them heated, as well as wrapping the base in blankets and a tarp to protect it from the cold/wind damage. Do you think we should cut the fawns that look dead? Or keep them on he tree until they fall off? Do you have any advice on what else we could do to protect our foxtails?
AnswerHi Lisa, the foxtails should be fine, they cold stressed, but thats normal when the temps drop below freezing; let the old fronds fall off by themselves, foxtails shed their own fronds, unlike queen palms that need to be trimmed up. Let mother nature take over now, as long as the new fronds that will be emerging are viable, you will be ok...regards Nick
