QuestionWe have a palm (don't know what kind) in the house which has been growing beautifully for several years. It has recently developed brown spots on some of the top leaves and the leaves on those branches are dull. The rest are bright, waxy green. Can you tell us what is happening and what to do about it? We can send photos if you need them.
Thanks for your help.
AnswerHi Wayne, its probably a "Majesty Palm", they are the most common house palms; the spots sound like a fungus, which is very common, even on outdoor palms. Try a broad spectrum fungicide (available at Home Depot, Lowes etc.), that should stop it from spreading; Indoor palms need to be misted on a regular basis and don't water them too much or you will rot the roots; the misting will prevent spider mites, which are a problem with indoor palms during the winter months; wait until a couple of days pass after you apply the fungicide before beginning your misting.
