QuestionI just bought 4 Hibiscus trees (or little shrubs-they are not FULLY grown up). Two of them have beautiful yellow flowers on them. The other two have red ones. I live in Hartselle, Alabama 35640. I got the yellow ones at walmart and the red ones at the local farmers co-op. I planted them yesterday and I am wondering if they will survive our winters. After reading all these sites about how they don't survive winters I am starting to get discouraged. Can you give me some feedback? Thanks!
AnswerHi Jenny, well, bad news is, a freeze will kill them, they can take a frost, but not a freeze, that said, I would grow them in a large decorative container, with the bottom lined with about 2 inches of gravel for drainage, and a light, good grade potting soil; keep it in morning sun and afternoon dappled shade, come winter, when a freeze is forecasted, move it inside and then back out the next day, or just move it in to a good sunny location for the winter, in any event, it won't be real happy inside, but you will at least be able to have it next spring, and move it back out for the summer. If you decide to do this, get back to me and I will give you info on maintaining it inside....Nick
