bouganvilla pests:

Question
For several years we've had a dwarf bouganvilla. Lately something has been eating the leaves back to the stalk. We have a few grasshoppers but I don't think they can eat as what has been devoured. Can't seem to find any pests on the plant.
What should I look for.

Answer
Pete, there are caterpillars that feed at night, but I'm inclined to think that you are being assailed by slugs, which are definitely night feeders, and hide during the light. Place some slug bait down, and a barrier of sand around the bougs, (they won't cross sand, because it adheres to their slimy bodies and will kill them). Check at night with a flashlight, and I'm willing to bet you catch them in the act...good luck Nick
