Dracaena

Question
I have what I believe is a Dracaena. At first I thought it was a palm but the leaves are live the Dracaena leaves. It is about 10 to 12 feet tall. It fell out of its pot and the top broke off. It had one side shoot so the plant will still live but I was wondering if there is any way to reroot this top which has a truck of about 1 to 2 feet left. Also the side shoot is about 3 feet below the break. Will it grow a new top or do I need to trim the truck to the side shoot.
Thanks for your help.
Bernadine

Answer
Hi Bern, ok, take the top and strip away all but the top crown, then cut the bottom at a slant, now get some vermiculite and moisten it in a pot and dip the end of the Dracaena cutting in a rooting hormone (not necessary, but will quicken the process) and insert it into the moistened vermiculite; keep the vermiculite damp and the container in a shady area, misting the crown each day and it should root for you and form a new plant. The original will be fine, the side shoot will become the primary growth and yes you can trim the broken end back to the side shoot....thats all you need, have fun and good luck.. Nick
