White bird of paradise plant

Question
I bought a white bird of paradise plant in january of 2007. I live in Midlothian , TX about 30 minutes south of dallas. My plant is located in the living room about 5 feet from the windows. I water it whenever the first inch of top soil is completely dry. It has been doing ok, leave stayed green but new leaves would form soon turn brown and dye. Now, I have moved the plant about 2 feet furter away from that window and all my existing leaves are getting the brown patches and curling downward. I don't know what to do. Can you help me. Thanks,
Ginger

Answer
Ginger, First, I don't recommend growing a white bird in a container, it just needs to much room to do its thing; but if you already have it in one, the reason your leaves are turning on you, is it is a tropical plant, needing high humidity to thrive. Growing a plant indoors puts it in a very arid environment, not conducive; Keep the soil evenly moist and the leaves misted each day, and it should turn the corner for you, the new leaves not browning out; there is nothing you can do for the existing leaves, watch the new ones and keep them misted...Nick
