Black Magic Elephant Ears

Question
I received to Black Magic Colocasia in the mail from
Spring Hill Nursery about a week ago . They came packaged
in soil with 2-3 leaves already on them .  I planted the same
day that they came. Now the leaves a brown and curling
around the edges. What could be the cause?

Answer
Kim, elephant ears are normally very resilient, but I have found the black magic to be somewhat sensitive; I had the same problem with mine and eventually settled with the more resilient common variety. They require even moisture and a shadier location; if you planted them where they are getting too much sun, this will most definitely burn the leaves; if you give the new plants too much water this will effect them also. When elephant ears are established, lots of water is the rule of thumb, but not when they are first planted; they need to establish their roots at this stage. Patience is a virtue when first planting a young plant, especially thats mail ordered, if however they do die, Spring Hill is very cooperative when it comes to replacing stock...good luck..Nick
