QuestionI live in the Philippines, a country with a tropical climate. I believe that passion flowers (passiflora)should grow very well here and I have seeds (from a reputable sed source in U.k.) that I would like to plant. The trouble is, the seed packet only has directions for growing in temperate U.K. so I am not too sure when I should plant the seeds, re-pot and plant outdoors to ensure the plants grow. Essentially, the climate is hot April through November. July to September is the rainy season (with the occasional tropical storm or typhoon). By December it seems to be a little cooler (25-28 deg C)and this respite from the heat lasts through until February when we are into the really blistering hot weather (with very little rain).
Any ideas on techniques adn planting schedules I could use to ensure success? I really love the flowers and feel that they would do really well here especially along the trellises I have at the front and side of the house.
Thank you for your suggestions
Terry
AnswerHello Terry,
Since you live in a tropical climate, when you plant really isn't an issue. You can still follow the seed package directions regarding spacing of seeds, depth to plant, light etc. Simply transplant to a larger pot when your passionflowers have formed their first set of true leaves. As they get larger you can transplant directly into the garden. Passionflowers will do well in your climate and depending on the variety may grow quite large and out of control in time. Don't be afraid to prune them back if this happens, they will come back stronger than ever. Good luck with your passionflowers!
